Step 5: make the whole top yellow

You have a yellow cross on top. Now twist the four corners so their yellow stickers face up too. Where the corners are doesn't matter yet; only which way they face.

The easy way: one corner at a time

The move is R' D' R D, done in pairs.

  1. Hold the cube with yellow on top. Don't turn the whole cube during this step: only turn the top layer.
  2. Look at the corner at the front-right-top. If its yellow faces up, go to step 4.
  3. Do R' D' R D twice. Check the corner. If yellow still isn't up, do it twice more. Four times is always enough.
  4. Turn the top layer only (U) to bring the next corner to the front-right.
  5. Repeat until all four corners are yellow on top. Then turn the top until the sides line up as well as they can.

The bottom layers will look scrambled halfway through. That's expected. They come back by themselves once the last corner is twisted up. Don't stop in the middle, and don't turn the whole cube.

R' D' R D × 4

One corner: (R' D' R D) ×4 twists it up (the rest looks broken for now)

R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D U R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D U R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D R' D' R D U U

All four corners: twist, U, twist, U … — the bottom repairs itself

The faster way: Sune

R U R' U R U2 R'

Sune solves the case where exactly one corner already has yellow up and the cross makes a "fish" shape.

  1. Hold the cube with that corner at the front-left.
  2. The front-right corner's yellow faces you.
  3. Do Sune.

R U R' U R U2 R'

Sune: one corner up at front-left → whole top yellow

For any other case, doing Sune once (from any angle) turns it into another case. Sooner or later you get the one-corner fish, so keep going. The twist-a-corner method above has no such guesswork; that's why it's taught first.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating the whole cube between corners. Turn only the top layer. If you rotate the cube, the bottom stays broken.
  • Stopping after an odd number of R' D' R D. Always do it in pairs.
  • Panicking when the bottom looks wrong. It sorts itself out after the last corner.
